Why is this important?
The impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) on the service industry in Wisconsin has been massive. Even before the necessary, mandated closures across Milwaukee County, the economic impact on bars and restaurants has been significant. The Small Business Administration has made working capital loans available to small business affected by COVID-19, which would allow us to pay our employees as long as possible during the shutdown and still be able to open when the disaster is over. Unfortunately, there has not yet been a declared "disaster" in Wisconsin, so those SBA loans are not yet accessible to those many businesses (and our employees) who desperately need them. We thank Tony Evers for starting that process, and hope that those loans will be available soon.
FAQs
Are these really bonds?
No. They're not really an investment or a financial instrument. They're gift certificates, designed to assist service industry folks and the places who employ them during a crisis when the federal and state assistance to our employees has been lacking.
What are the criteria to be listed?
All restaurants here have made significant efforts to stand with their employees, during this crisis and beyond. Some offer health insurance; some offer paid time off and/or sick days; some offer retirement benefits. Some have advocated for employees across the industry so that many more restaurants (and employees) can have access to the rights and benefits that make weathering a disaster like this one easier for everyone (and easier on the public). You can see our efforts here.
I have a question about when a specific restaurant or bar will be open for business again
Us too. These will always be good for their face value, though, even if you can't make it to the restaurant during the month that a gift card "matures". One can be used per visit.
What will my card/certificate/e-gift card look like?
This will vary based on the restaurant or bar issuing it. Some will mail you a physical cards or certificate, some will email you an e-gift card. You can ask the participating bar or restaurant for details.
The place I tried to buy one from says they're sold out!
Some places are limiting sales to a certain number per day or week. Try again tomorrow or next week.
Are these like regular gift cards?
These are promotional gift cards. Although you can buy as many as are available, you can use one per visit, as buying a hundred gift cards, and showing up in August to get a $4000 wedding banquet might not really be supporting folks the way we're intending to.
Are there any other costs involved?
Yes. You'll be responsible for the rest of the tab, obviously, and you should be tipping your servers, since you're clearly not a terrible person. Restaurants and bars often report that people using gift certificates tip less. Don't be that person, please, especially to employees already hit hard by this crisis.
How do I add my restaurant/bar's gift cards to this program?
Reach out here! As long as you meet the criteria, we'll add you as soon as we can.
What else can I do to help as a consumer?
Head here! We can work together to assure that our industry, and our employees, are insulated from economic instability like this in the future.
I have other questions
Feel free to reach out to participating restaurants and bars directly. Each of them handles gift cards/certificates a little differently. All of them are trying their best to do the right thing for their employees.
